2 ideas for hospitals to move closer to health 2.0

Idea # 1 Make Wireless LAN available throughout the hospital. Idea # 2 Encourage each doctor and each nurse working at the hospital to use his/her LapTop computer at work – not least to show patients relevant blogs, wikis, and other websites, on which patients, themselves, can exchange knowledge with other patients, doctors, nurses, and other experts globally on how to become healthier.

The church is also participating at EURO 2008

To know more about how the church is involved in EURO 2008 , have a look at kirche08.eu , a joint initiative by the churches in Austria and Switzerland.

Education: Memorisation is valueless when students are one click away from Google and Wikipedia

During the past few months, I’ve been following an e-learning forum at the University of Zurich focusing on e-assessment. You can have a look at the program, the presentations of the presenters, as well as the videos of the interesting meetings here . On Tuesday, May 20th, Mr. Bobby Elliott stopped by in Zurich to share his experiences. I was not least struck by this comment of Mr. Elliott: Memorisation is valueless when students are one click away from Google and Wikipedia. You can watch and listen to Mr. Elliott’s presentation, which is challenging status quo, by clicking here .

Changing the culture of how people fly. Part # 2

In this January 9th posting , focus was on changing the way people fly. You can find more on that topic by taking a lot at this 1½ minute video: Mr. Yves Rossy flies through the Swiss mountains with a jet engine powered wings on his back. You can read more about Mr. Rossy on his website www.jet-man.com

Do you want a high performance team? Then encourage people who are different from each other to work together

Watching/listening to/reading this very interesting INSEAD Knowledge interview with Mr. Carlos Ghosn, I noticed not least this passage: "When you have a very diverse team – people of different backgrounds, different culture, different gender, different age, you are going to get a more creative team – probably getting better solutions, and enforcing them in a very innovative way and with a very limited number of preconceived ideas." On page 401 of the book Organizational Culture and Leadership by Mr. Edgar H. Schein, I read this: "The more turbulent the environment, the more likely it is that the more diverse organization will have the resources to cope with unpredicted events." "For diversity to be a resource, the subcultures must be connected and must learn to value each other enough to learn something of each other’s culture and language. A central task for the learning leader , then, is to ensure good cross-cultural communication and understanding throughou...

2 suggestions from Mr. Manfred Manser, Helsana to develop health care in Switzerland

In this posting , I referred to www.zurichvitaparcours.ch , an interesting initiative by the company Zurich . The money to invest in the further development of healthy initiatives like this one - for example in and around larger cities where many people live - needs to come from somewhere. But from where? In an interview brought in NZZ am Sonntag of May 11th, 2008, Mr. Manfred Manser , CEO of Helsana , came up with some suggestions to improve health care in Switzerland. I noticed, not least, these two: Suggestion # 1: Allow parallel import Question in interview: "Um wie viel Prozent würde sich das Gesundheitswesen verbilligen, wenn die Schweiz Parallelimporte zuließe?" Answer by Mr. Manfred Manser, Helsana: "Die Gesundheitspreise sind hier im Schnitt 30 Prozent höher als im Ausland. Wenn wir die differenzierte, internationale Erschöpfung bei Arzneimitteln zuließen, würde dies pro Versicherten 2 bis 3 Prozent weniger Prämien pro Jahr bedeuten. Es ist längst klar, dass Par...

Ideas to improve health care. Part # 5. Involve people across various borders

On e-patients.net and on the blog of Ted Eytan , you’re encouraged to give your thoughts on what Health 2.0 is. You can get some more inspiration about Health 2.0 from Wikipedia here . A question for those of you with good knowledge about this: Do you have a couple links to interesting blogs of doctors or nurses who work, on their respective blogs, on involving people with different competencies - for example patients, dietitiants, sports trainers, physical therapists, employees/managers at pharmaceutical companies, employees/managers at life insurance companies, employees/managers at food and beverage companies etc. - in improving health care?

Ideas to improve health care. Part # 4: Make sports events

On www.schweizbewegt.ch , I read this: "Folgende Faktoren tragen dazu bei, dass sich die Gesundheit unserer Bevölkerung langsam, aber stetig verschlechtert: - Zu wenig Bewegung - Zu viel Medienkonsum - Unausgewogene Ernährung - Psychischer und sozialer Stress" Yesterday evening, I participated at City Challenge in Zurich – an event helping people to exercise more, i.e. do something about the above mentioned problems. Everyone who wanted to go for a run could join in and assist the city, at which they participated, in winning the City Challenge. The city recording the highest numbers of kilometres run by the people won the competition. Here are the results of yesterday's City Challenge in Switzerland: First place: Basel. 5,926 km. 2nd place: Zürich. 3,831 km. 3rd place: Bern. 1,662 km. 4th place: Geneva. 1,110 km.

Cemetery development

A "FriedWald" is an alternative to a traditional cemetery. As the word indicates, the cemetery is located in the forrest. On www.friedwald.ch , I read this: "Die Bestattungskultur befindet sich im Wandel. Photo source

Ideas to improve health care. Part # 3: Make working hours more flexible

Between 7 AM and 9 AM and between 4 PM and 6 PM there are, in many cities, traffic jams going out and/or into the city - not least because many people work during the same hours of the days. Result: Many people waste a lot of time sitting in traffic jams – time that could be used to work and/or get some exercise. Using a concrete example from banking, I have a couple of ideas to solve the problem: Idea # 1 To bank employees: How about teaching your customers - including your elderly customers - how they use e-banking (even better)? Also, what about using other collaborative technologies such as a blog or a LiveChat to communicate with your customers? That way, people can use the bank when they want and where want. And by using collaborative technologies, you can make the product you offer to your customers more individual. Idea # 2 Using e-banking, people can use the bank anytime and anywhere. However, many people still like to go to a bank located in a physical location. The problem f...
